The emphasis of our program is on establishing discipline and courtesy. The structure of respect is built into the Martial Arts instruction with bowing to all high belts and obeying the teacher's instruction without question. The program builds confidence and character by providing the child with control over his or her body and ability to stand up to peer pressure and other intimidating situations. The movements of Martial Arts develop coordination, which is very important during the growing years. The awarding of higher levels of Martial Arts belts gives the child a sense of achievement and accomplishment. We keep this very much in mind. Because the length of time for achieving belts can be from two to four months, we award stripes on the belt as the child progresses between levels. Training for these test and passing them enhances the child's ability to concentrate and plan for the triumph over learning hurdles. This is an excellent reinforcement of study techniques for school. The foundation of Martial Arts is its self-defense value. We are very careful to teach children that Martial Arts is not to be used outside the karate class in any manner other than true self-defense. The result is a self-confident child who does not need to bully or show-off to other children. And finally, Martial Arts are good, clean fun. It provides another avenue for children to burn off extra energy. |
